Match Report

At last, after a 2 week delay due to ground conditions, the new season got underway but not in the way Portsmouth had hoped for. After giving up a 17-8 lead in the late stages of the first half they lost 36-46. A penalty almost on full time when they were within 7 points and hoping for a second bonus point, was taken away from them when the resultant kick was converted taking the difference to 10 points.

5 minutes into the match and Portsmouth lost Sam Masters to a yellow card for an infringement in the red zone. Bournemouth took full advantage and opened the scoring with a try out wide. The missed conversion saw the score at 0-5 after 7 minutes. Portsmouth were soon back on the attack and from a lineout close to the try line Portsmouth set up a good catch and drive, making about 10 metres with skipper Will Rolfe crossing for their first try.

A missed conversion saw the match level at 5 a piece with about 13 minutes on the clock. Will Rolfe then added to his first score with a good try which was converted by Gareth Davies taking the score to 12-5 on 25 minutes. 10 minutes later Bournemouth narrowed the gap with a penalty taking the score to 12-8. However 3 minutes later it was the turn of Liam Avis to increase their lead with an unconverted try, taking the score to 17-8. Portsmouth then lost scrum half Alex Dufus to a yellow card. With only a few minutes of the half remaining Bournemouth, through their backs managed to score twice taking the half time score to 17-22.

The second half started with another Bournemouth try scoring charge, dotting down twice with both tries being converted , extending their lead to 17- 36. in the process gaining a bonus point for 4 tries. Alex Randell scored a well worked try, converted by Davies, taking the score 24-36. on 50 minutes.
5 minutes later Bournemouth added to their score with a converted try, extending their lead to 24-43. Sam Masters then narrowed the gap with an unconverted try, making the score 29-43 on 70 minutes. With full time approaching Liam Avis then added to Portsmouth’s score with a try converted by Davies, taking the score to 36-43. If the score stayed till the final whistle then they would at least get a second bonus point, instead a penalty to Bournemouth in range of the posts, was converted taking the final score to 36-46.

A very disappointing result and a game we could have won, poor tackling and failing to hold on to the ball didn’t help. We had the better pack but their backs were better than ours on the day. Next week we are away to Andover, they lost away to Farnham 2’s 43-34
