About Us

HISTORY

Portsmouth Rugby Club was formed in 1886 following the joining of the two leading clubs in the city, Victoria Football Club and Southsea Football Club. In 1888-89, the club was quick to impress in its first season when led by captain of Hampshire Rugby, Harry Andrews and led to the team winning the Hampshire Cup in 1890. The club went on to play throughout the Boer War, the Great War and World War 2.

Many years later, in 1975, the former training space was transformed. With the help of raised funds the prefabricated clubhouse was turned from rags to riches.

In 2000, Portsmouth Rugby club were promoted to London 2 South and went on to be runners up in the division for three seasons. The club currently plays in London 2 South West and runs 5 senior sides, one ladies side, a colts side and mini-section of 350.
