Dear All,
Seasons
Greetings! I hope your crackers are ready to be pulled and your
nuts about to be crushed. Some of you have already had an early
present with the 100 hundred club draws for October and November.
There will be more to come as the season unfolds. The excitement is
almost unbearable!
You will
remember last season’s poor start followed by a change of fortune
later which saw us stay in London 1 for a second season. So far this
season seems to be a reverse of this with a couple of good results
early on then some poor ones. Excellent losing performances (if
that’s possible) against Barnes at the beginning of the season and
against Richmond later in the year show that the 1st XV is capable
of living with the best in this league but we have also played some
mediocre rugby, giving away too many silly points. The Shelford
match was an example where we gave them a 14 point start then lost
by 4!
The 2nd
Team are finding life hard in the Canterbury Leagues but they are
playing with great spirit and determination at the moment. The 3rd
team are showing some promise in Hampshire Merit Table 1 and the 4th
team are continuing their progress in Hampshire Merit Table 3. The
Vets continue their winning ways under the guidance and joint
captaincy of Mike Bailey and Mike Caspall. After defeating Havant,
Basingstoke and Farnborough in the cup, they finally succumbed in
the final against Petersfield. A good time was had by all in the
after match celebrations as Mike Caspall will confirm –was it 8
stitches Mike?
The Women’s team
continues to thrive under the coaching of Jim Pearce and the Colts
team has put together some impressive results already.
To those fashion
aficionados amongst you, an addition this year has been the club
blazer which our illustrious Chairman, Simon Barlow, sourced for us.
These have now been with us for some time and, I must say, we put on
a super show when we are dressed in our finery. It was hoped that
there would be plenty of cloth left for a second order for those who
missed out but, having supplied myself, Ken Reilly, Roger Nichols
and Doctor Dick, they have used it all up!
I am enclosing
some more diaries for those whose subscriptions have reached George
or me. All those who have paid me, or sent money to George, or
whose standing orders have been paid, should have a diary by now.
Which, conversely, means that those who do not, have either
overlooked their subscription or been overlooked. I know the post
is slow at Christmas but 3 months?? Either way I would be delighted
to hear from you so that you don’t miss out! The first hundred club
draw of 2008 will take place on Saturday, the 5th
January, so it’s important to make sure you are included.
Can I add a
reminder to all of you who pay by Standing Order that the
subscription has been £55 for a couple of years now. A few of you
still have standing orders for £50. You owe a fiver! I accept
cheques or cash! George has asked, please can you amend your
standing orders to avoid confusion in future.
All in all,
things are going well for the club with a lively atmosphere. The
Lunches are well attended but there’s still room for more so I hope
to see you all at lunch soon! Two social events to mention are the
Burns Night Celebration on the 25th January, – see the
enclosed flyer, and a possible ex-players dinner – see the lunch
booking sheet for more details.
Wishing you
nearly as much health wealth and happiness as I wish myself, and if
you get more than me, it’s your round!!
Yours,
Pip Robson
